Congratulations to ASR members on a week of excellent performances, Some of the highlights were:

* Don Wallace and Nickey Carroll’s team set a new record in the Kokoda Challenge Trail Race in the Gold Coast Hinterland. Glenn Barltrop, Cassie Brown and Connor Stanton also competed in the event.

* Hamish Granger was selected in the Queensland Team for the National Cross Country Championships after finishing fifth in the State Titles last Saturday. Tim Gibson has also been selected in the State Team.

* At the World University Orienteering Championships Rachel Effeney represented Australia well in a number of events with her best result being 25th place in the Sprint event, only dropping down from 6th place in the last four minutes of the event.

* At the Nickey Carroll Shield meet at St Paul’s Hubertien Wichers, Lisa O’Donovan and Lynda Bateson made it a trifecta in taking out the individual and teams results in the Masters Women’s 4k Championship. Ron Peters won the Men’s 50+ while Daryl Crook finished in fourth placing in the Open Men’s. Osman Saleh also set a new PB of

21.38 in the 6k event.

* At The Gap High School’s athletics carnival there were a number of good efforts from club athletes. Among those who recorded victories that I was able to come across were:

Tim Hurley - Open Boys 100m, 200m and 400m Heat

Tim Gibson - Open Boys 400m Heat

Alex Dalzell - Open Boys 800m (2.09) and 1500m (4.41)

Eleanor Dalzell - 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m (Dead-Heat)

Jared Easterbrook and Josh Gibson also performed well across a number of events, with the 800m and 1500m being highlights for Jared.

* At the World Junior Athletics Championships former club member Adrian Plummer has made it through to the semi-finals of the 800m with a clocking of 1.50.0. Adrian and his coach Bill Francis worked extensively over the years with some of our key support people like physio Michael Dalgleish and podiatrist Ash Mahoney. In an environment where distance runners in Australia have tended to be pretty nonchalant about the importance of strength work, the dedication that Adrian showed in this area as a younger athlete appears to now be paying full dividiends. Adrian joined the Gold Coast club where he lives a couple of years ago after being a member of Ashgrove for a number of years.

On July 18, Ashgrove Rangers Athletics Club played host to Qld Masters Athletics for their short course cross country championship. The race was held in conjunction with the Rangers’ monthly Flying 4 race.

A chilly 8am start meant times were slower than might have been expected.

Rangers members performed well in the event. Alastair Wallace took out gold in the 50-55 age group in 18:06.50 and was the first male across the line. Paul Circosta (21:21.12) took out silver in the same age group. Paul Holland gained gold in the male 40-44 age group in a time of 19:12.69.

The Rangers male team of Wallace, Circosta, Paul Holland and Dick Dunstan took out gold in the teams category.

It’s been very busy the last few weeks with the Track and Field Championships all over Queensland and in Perth.

The QA championships were held two weeks ago at the QEII Stadium with some great performances from our Rangers.

Gemma Fairclough - Open Women’s 100m heats 13.6 - ranked 10th, 200m heats 27.7 - ranked 11th

Marty Lane - 11.04 in heats (ranked equal 7th), 11.30 in final for 8th place

Andrew Barralet - 1.51.1 in the heats (ranked 6th), 1.50.7 for 6th place in the 800m final

Daryl Crook - 3.55 for 7th place in the 1500m final

Last weekend the Little Athletics State Championships were held in Townsville. It was a great event for families from all over Queensland to meet and have a good time, and our younger Rangers did very well.

Hamish Granger won Gold in the 1500m and Silver in the 800m for the under 12s. Excellent work Hamish, and congratulations!

Freyja Lee ran great coming 4th in the 1500m and also competed in the 800m under 12 girls. Jarod Easterbrook ran very well qualifying for and running in the 200m hurdles final, where he faced some very fierce competition in the under 14 boys. Congratulations Freyja and Jarod!

Last but not least: The Australian Masters Championships are on its way this Easter in Perth, and the results so far are great with our Vice-President Peter James winning Gold in the 10,000m for 60 - 65 year olds. Excellent work Peter, and congratulations!

Our Treasurer and Registrar Dick Dunstan put in a good performance for the 800m and 1500m championships for the 60 - 64 year olds by placing 9th and 7th respectively. Well done Dick!

Gemma (2nd left)

Congratulations to Gemma Fairclough who won a Gold Medal in the Australian University Games at the Gold Coast on the 4th October. Gemma competed for QUT Team in the Medley Relay and also picked up a bronze medal in the 4 x 100m.

Congratulations also to Rachel Effeney who finished second in the senior National Orienteering Championships Sprint Distance at the Australian Orienteering Championships at Benalla in Victoria on the 2nd October.

These are both great results especially considering that both Gemma and Rachel were battling niggling injuries going into these events.

Well done girls - fitting rewards for two of our most consistently dedicated athletes.
