Daryl Crook and Andrew Barralet both had outstanding runs on Thursday at the National.

Gold for Daryl (middle) at 2009 State Champs
Andrew ran a pb and broke the club record again in the 800m in 1:50.67 placing 4th in his heat. Andrew’s performance over the last 200m was very impressive. After having been boxed in for about 1.5 laps and being spat out at the back of the pack, he surged over the last 200m his way through the pack and finished 4th in his heat. Congratulations Andrew!
Daryl ran a massive 13 second pb in the finals for the 3000m Steeple Chase and holds the club record now in a time of 9:06! He ran a very smart race, not being tempted to run too fast at the start, taking all the jumps smoothly . Daryl ended in a proud 4th place. Well done Daryl: an excellent result!

Congratulations to Don who achieved an excellent result at the Six Foot Track Marathon on the weekend. He came fourth in a blistering time of 3 hours and 27 minutes. Don (47) also broke the age category (40 - 49) record by 3.5 minutes .

For a bit more background: Don held the race record for this epic race between 1991 and 2007. The Six Foot Track promotes itself as the ‘toughest marathon in Australia’. It takes a normal runner about 1.5 times the normal marathon time to run this 45.5km race through the Blue Mountains, starting at Katoomba and finishing at the Jenolan Caves, with a total ascent/descent of about 1500m/1800m.
The scenery on the way is great, it starts off in a forestry area with an immediate down-hill run down the escarpment. Then the track leads you through a variety of landscapes including paddocks and Eucalypt forests. Just over an hour into the race you cross the Cox river to by wading through it. This wet experience is followed by a hill, which takes the fastest runners just under an hour to ascend. The trick is to keep enough fuel in the legs to ensure a successful completion of the race as there are plenty of hills to come. The finish of this race is very special. On the final descent to the Jenoal Caves you can hear the announcer at the finish line and you can feel the great atmosphere built by the spectators awaiting your arrival. A post race dip in the cool river is part of the post-race recovery to ease the legs and the hips. Have a look at www.sixfoot.com to read more about this great race and see the results and pictures.

Well done to the following athletes who competed at the Garry Brown Shield, the final event for the season: Gemma Fairclough, Steven Scott - new find in the 400m hurdles, Patrick Poon, Andrew Barralet and Marty Lane.
Even though our numbers were down for this one and we ended up without any relay teams, there were some good efforts from everyone highlighted by Marty Lane keeping Patrick Johnson honest at least for the first ten metres of the 100 metres.
This track season has been a very good one for QA and for Ashgrove Rangers with Track and Field now moving firmly in a better direction for probably the first time in 25 years.
