Named after our own Nickey Carroll, the next Cross Country Shield Meet is held on Sat 18 April at Yeronga starting at 3pm.

Nickey ran for many years with the Ashgrove Rangers and is an exceptionally talented athlete. Her marathon pb is 2:25:51 set in London in 1999, and with that she is still the third fastest female Australian over that distance.

Nickey is an Olympian and has represented Australia in two IAAF World Athletics Championships. Nickey has won events many of us only dream about entering like the Paris International Marathon, where she broke the course record, and the Californian International Marathon.

Peter, Wayne, Don and Nickey - Kokoda Challenge 2008

While not competing as often now, she still clocks up some amazing times. In 2008 the Nike Hammer Team, consisting of Nickey and fellow Ashgrove Rangers Don Wallace and Wayne Heath, and Victory Sports’ Peter Hall, broke its own record for the Kokoda Challenge (96km: 11hours 54 minutes, Gold Coast Hinterland).

Nickey has inspired many people over the years and always encourages other athletes to realise their potential and believe in themselves.

Come and meet Nickey at Yeronga and help us to win the shield for her and the Ashgrove Rangers. While Nickey may not compete, she will be there on the day to support us all.

For more details of the Yeronga race schedule please see the Season Calendar & Programs. If you have not yet signed up for the season, you can so at the Ashgrove Rangers’ tent on the 18th.

See you there!
